The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has a mission to “assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance”. It was founded in the early 1970’s, long before internet connections were as standard as phone service for businesses. Since then, OSHA has made great strides in embracing the digital world for record keeping, and organizations in any supply chain should follow their lead.
The OSHA Injury Tracking Application (ITA) was launched on August 1, 2017. It was designed to allow employers to submit their 300A forms electronically, which saves time and resources. The 300A form tracks injury and illness data and must be submitted annually. OSHA recently announced that they are extending the deadline for submitting the 300A form reporting on 2016 data from July 1, 2017 to December 1, 2017. This decision was made to allow affected employers time to learn how to use the ITA and to allow proper governmental oversight on the new electronic reporting requirements.
The ITA does appear to make reporting easier on organizations that fall within this category. In fact, OSHA is offering three methods for data submission, including: manual data entry via a web form, CSV upload to process single or multiple businesses, and transmission from an automated recordkeeping system via API.
OSHA is also phasing in new requirement deadlines over the next two years. In 2018, the submission deadline for affected establishments with 250 or more employees must submit required forms (300A, 300, 301) by July 1. The same deadline applies to establishments with less than 250 employees, but they are only required to submit Form 300A. In 2019 and beyond, the deadline moves up to March 2.
