OSRAM multicloud strategyOSRAM is reinventing light.

In 2016, the company, whose history dates back more than 100 years, divested its LED and traditional lamp business to focus on the digital future of light. Be it with laser light for automobiles, increased security thanks to iris recognition or intelligently connected lighting, OSRAM is transforming light into more than just illumination.

The company’s leaders knew that as they launched new products and entered new markets, business flexibility was vital. OSRAM looked to the cloud as a way to take advantage of changing market conditions.

Choosing a multicloud strategy

OSRAM chose to partner with IBM because of its reputation as a strong cloud provider with ample expertise. IBM had provided cloud hosting for an OSRAM subsidiary, and company leaders were satisfied with the service. Data security and compliance were important considerations, and because IBM has data centers worldwide, it could meet OSRAM’s requirement that data remain in Germany.

IBM Services facilitated the migration of OSRAM’s SAP landscape from an on-premises environment to a managed service built on the IBM Cloud for SAP Applications. At the same time, IBM Services helped OSRAM move its non-SAP applications to IBM Cloud Managed Services. It only took nine months to complete both migrations.

When OSRAM later decided that an unmanaged service would be more aligned with its requirements, leaders decided to implement a multi-cloud strategy. IBM Services helped the company move its non-SAP applications over to IBM Cloud bare metal servers. This complex migration was completed in only six months and with a business downtime of less than a day. The IBM team took advantage of IBM Cloud for VMware solutions to test and adapt individual migrations, ensuring that everything would go smoothly.

Focusing on innovation

Moving to IBM Cloud has enabled OSRAM to adapt rapidly to changing circumstances and scale capacity up and down as demand fluctuates.

The company has also been able to reduce costs across its SAP and non-SAP environments and has expanded its disaster-recovery capabilities.

OSRAM’s multicloud strategy offers the agility to react fast to new demands as the company continues to transform: because managed services has freed up IT personnel, they can focus on innovation.
